Romanian Rescue

Social issues and their importance vary from country to country and perspective to perspective. In Canada, the importance of our social issues focuses strongly on the welfare of the people and of animals, not only within Canada, but throughout the world. We are a country of people who are dedicated to helping the world, not just ourselves. But, there are countries who have different perspectives on important social issues in regards to the value of humans and animals.

Romania is among those.

Laura Fincu, a Romanian rescue shelter owner, knows that this social problem is very prominent in Romania, but she is perhaps one of the few people within Romania that believes it is a problem that needs to be categorized as ‘highly important’. In Romania, animal welfare is not faired as significant and therefore Romania itself is a scene of abused, malnourished, homeless and roaming dogs. Fincu decided that this was not the image she wanted, so she decided to begin an animal welfare system. This shelter system began when she was living at a student’s home and a mother and her puppies living in their yard were close to death. Once she was able to find them a home and save them from early death, she knew change wouldn’t come unless action was taken. This began her shelter and her system to initiate change in an otherwise static and untouched social issue.

Her rescue system is this: she rescues the dogs from the streets, keeps them in her shelter until they are ready to be given to proper homes. The shelter provides homes for these dogs all across Europe, including Germany, Austria, Finland, England and Switzerland.

Fincu believes that the most incredible stories would come from the dogs. While we may not be able to hear the stories of these animals’ struggles, we can watch their recovery. Animals have a remarkable desire to survive and watching them rise after they have fallen is an incredible and inspirational thing. It is a story watching them persevere, without any words spoken.

"I started all this because I couldn't stand the idea that we live in a country that can't manage the social problem of stray dogs in a humane, dignified way. I decided to fight with this, still believing in my country, in goodness, in love with nature and animals. I started this from love of animals and love for Romania," Fincu said.

Fincu hopes to eventually begin a big neutering program, for the dogs who have owners. This would be an information program too, as well as a very important educational tool. Fincu wants to be able to have direct contact with dog owners, offering them free neutering programs, teaching them a dog’s needs and rights.
